Young Designer of the year
This year saw the introduction of the Somerlap Young Designer of the Year 2009 competition.
The competition was open to young people aged between 11 and 16 years attending schools within a 30-miles radius of Somerlap’s office in Mark, Somerset. The aim of the competition was for youngsters to design a product made from timber.
The winning entry was received from Sinead Byrom, aged 15 who attends the Kings of Wessex School, Cheddar. Sinead designed a cedar Summerhouse with unique seat storage units. Sinead won £100 for herself, £100 gift vouchers for her school and a day out at Diggerland, Devon.
The runner-up was Henry Mansfield who designed a cold-frame. Henry is 12 years old and attends The Blue School, Wells. Henry designed a cold-frame. He provided great explanation and gave consideration to ways of changing the product to suit multi-users. Henry won a day out at Crealy Adventure Park, Devon.
