Somerlap uses for bark The Somerlap groundcover range offers natural, cost effective uses for bark. Spruce Ornamental bark (left) and Play bark (right) are ideal for enhancing gardens, walkways, play areas and allotments.

Bark is a fantastic multi-purpose product with plenty of uses all around the garden. Here are five of the best uses for bark...

1. Improve soil condition

Bark helps stop soil erosion in heavy rain, while keeping moisture in during hot weather. It also helps protect plants during winter, by stopping the soil from getting too cold.

Best choice for soil condition: Composted bark.

2. Walkways

Bark is an extremely cost effective alternative to paving slabs or gravel for creating a garden path. You'll need to lay your bark about 10cm deep to allow for the compression from people walking on it.

Best choice for walkways: Spruce Ornamental bark or Play bark.

3. Borders

Bark makes borders look neat and tidy, providing a lovely contrast against plants. It's also great for use in pots and window boxes.

Best choice for borders: Spruce Ornamental bark.

4. Play areas

Bark is an ideal choice for around play areas including slides, climbing frames and even play houses.

As well as providing an impact absorbing covering to cushion landings, the bark will also improve the look of the area and prevent muddy patches during rainfall.

Best choice for playgrounds: Play bark

5. Suppress weeds

Bark blocks sunlight, providing a natural barrier that stops weeds from growing. A covering about 5cm deep should be enough to suppress weeds.

Using bark in this way is particularly helpful in low-maintenance areas like car parks – keeping them looking smart and weed free.

Best choice for suppressing weeds: Composted bark or Spruce Ornamental bark.
