As the cold weather rolls in, it’s important to make sure your garden is winter ready. If you have a wooden garden shed, one of the steps you should take is ensuring your shed is protected for the winter. That way, when spring rolls around, it’ll still look as good as always.

Follow Somerlap’s top tips below for protecting your wooden garden shed this winter.

1.     Apply treatment to the wood

The wood of your garden shed should be treated, to prevent wood shrinkage and cracking in the cold winter temperatures. It will also help waterproof your garden shed and increase its lifespan.

We stock Protek Stable Coat, a perfect water-proofing wood treatment that protects your wood and gives your shed long-term protection. Available in five different colours.

2.     Oil the locks and hinges

Futureproof your shed by applying some oil to the metal locks and hinges of your shed. Applying oil will prevent locks from seizing up and stop hinges from squeaking.

3.     Check your shed is secure

The last thing you want is your wooden garden shed to fall foul of the unpredictable winter weather. If there are any overhanging branches above your shed, consider removing these – in strong winds, these could fall and damage your shed. Any branches rubbing the top of your shed can also damage the felt covering of your roof in a relatively short period of time.

Secure your shed’s roof by checking for the felt and fastening down any loose bits. It’s also worth making sure all your shed’s walls are secure and steady and ready to withstand the winter winds.

4.     Remove excess snow and water

In the winter, snow and heavy rain is always a possibility. Whilst snow on your shed may look picturesque, it is actually a good idea to remove excess snow from the roof of your shed as soon as possible. Have something like a soft brush handy, so you can safely sweep snow off your shed without ripping the roof felt.

Check your shed for any drainage problems before winter hits. Leaves in the guttering will make it difficult for excess water to drain from your shed during heavy rain storms, so make sure your shed’s guttering is clear.
